Yesterday, Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley filed suit to the United States Supreme Court stating that the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996 is unconstitutional. The suit is filed on the grounds that this act interferes with the state’s right to define what constitutes marriage and that the act forces states to discriminate against same-sex married coupled. If the DOMA is found to be unconstitutional it would be a firm statement supporting the inherent equality of all people. It is time that we reaffirm that “all people are created equal” and establish that all marriages receive the same benefits for spouses. Massachusetts is the first state to legalize same-sex marriage and as such is being threatened by the government with a loss of funding to MassHealth if we fail to comply with the DOMA.
I am proud to see our Attorney General and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts lead the way on this issue once again. We are fortunate to live in a state that is always at the forefront of the fight to establish and preserve liberty for all people.
